We all just want to be happy.
Most of us have no idea what a life of unconditional happiness would look like. Most of us are simply content to have made it through the day, to remain in one piece, and to have enough strength left to tackle another day.
Lately I have been thinking a lot about this concept. So in true Nicole fashion I decided to return to a book I read a few months ago.
This week my re-read of choice has been The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer. As I was nearing the end of the book for the second time I came across a chapter that spoke to me. It was literally like I had an "A-HA!" moment as I sat quietly in my favourite local coffee shop.
What if unconditional happiness is a choice?
What if our lives strictly come down to our ability to commit to ourselves? Or with a quick change in word choice....our ability to choose to be happy....
Let me explain..
Michael Singer is a spiritual guru and one of New York Times Best-selling authors and he says this;
"If you know how to live a daily life it becomes a liberating experience. At first you have to approach life properly, or it can be very confusing. To begin with, you have to realize that you really only have one choice in this life, and it's not about your career, whom you marry, or whether you seek spiritual relief. People tend to burden themselves with so many choices. But in the end, you can throw it all away and make one basic, underlying decision: Do you want to be happy, or do you not want to be happy?"
As I sat there reading through the rest of this chapter I began to realize how complicated we as humans allow life to become. How simple events that occur in our day and in our lives are given permission to disturb us, hinder us and in essence make us unhappy. However we allow this to occur, every single day we allow certain things to disturb our world.
What if you began to view life as a series of events that will occur regardless of what you choose to do on a daily basis? Billions of things could happen to you that you haven't even thought of yet. Usually I would follow this sentence with...we have no idea what will happen...but today I will follow it with this...
Things are going to happen...the real question is whether you want to be happy regardless of what happens in your life?
Recently I have made this commitment to myself, recently I have realized that all I truly want from my life is to be happy. Regardless of the circumstance, the weather, the fortune or misfortune...I want to be happy.
I have realized that this commitment is not a light one. It is also one that many of us choose not to make in our lives. Committing yourself to unconditional happiness will teach you every single thing there is to learn about yourself.
You will begin to learn how and why you resist certain areas in your life and in turn discover how your resistance is leading to a never ending cycle of stress. You will learn all about your mind, your heart and your will.
But you have to mean it when you say you want to commit to happiness for the rest of your life. It will be the most difficult thing you EVER take on in this life but also the most rewarding.
This week I have realized that no matter what happens in life...you can always choose to enjoy the experience. No matter what happens, find a way to enjoy the life that comes to you. After all it isn't about counting the days we have left.....its about making the days count.
Today I ask you one serious question that I suggest you take some time to think about....
Do you want to be happy?
